LPD Depreciated in Windows Server 2012

$

  Background:

Microsoft Windows Servers are the absolute best when used as binary pass-through print servers using LPD/LPR.  Easy to backup, restore, migrate, make highly available without clustering, are fast and reliable.  You don't have driver issues, higher traffic from workstation/printer polling, no domain requirements like normal Windows printing or having to shut down all printers to make changes like some other non-Windows OSes. They are basically just traffic cops for printing and perform the job very well.  I could go on for pages about the advantages of that methodology.   ...but on to the Question.

  Question:

Microsoft has said that it has depreciated LPD in Windows Server 2012.  The wording of LPD being removed "in subsequent versions" isn't completely clear to me.  Do they mean in SP1 or SP2 or do they mean in the next full version of Windows Server 20nn? Does anyone have any insight on that wording?

Spooler Service Hanging on Some Machines in Domain

Hello All,

I have a very weird case and have exhausted my troubleshooting. I have users in a remote office with issues printing. Every morning a handful of users cannot print and restarting the spooler resolves the issue until next reboot. Only a handful of users are affected out of many. The users are on Windows 7 x86/x64 fully patched, desktops and laptops. I have tried removing the printers and all drivers, running hotfixes, registry fixes, disabling windows firewall and UAC, etc. Right now I have a batch file that stops and restarts the spooler service under each users startup but this is a bandaid and not a solution. Anyone have any recommendations? This issue has occurred out of nowhere.

I cleaned up the print server of old printers and drivers, patched it and rebooted it. Windows firewall is disabled. UAC is disabled. What's really odd is when the user is experiencing the issue, when they double-click on one of the network printers it says the Spooler service on the server is not running. When I restart the service locally on the workstation it works instantly.

Only network printers are affected. When the issue is occurring the user is able to print to local printers fine.

Hi

I need to change the default printer used by the SYSTEM account in Windows 2003. I found the following tip to change the reg key:

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Device

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Printers
DeviceOld

is it safe method or maybe there is different way to do this?

occasionally my printer will make some noise (like when it starts to print from sleeping mode) and sound like to start a job then stop?

I am pretty sure I am not sending job to my printer but occasionally it will re-activate like when you just sent a job to it and the printer started to print. Then it will stop.

Really noisy and not necessary.

How can I stop it? thought this should be a printer configuration thing.

Access denied creating local port (Server 2012 only)

This is a domain network. All computers are domain members.

Windows 7 pro workstations currently have local ports connected to shared printers on a windows 2003 R2 server

I am replacing the 2003R2 server with a 2012 server.

when I try to create local ports mapped to the new server I get access denied error unless I am logged onto the workstation as a domain administrator

I need regular domain users to be able to access these ports. (they are local administrators on their workstations, but no admin rights at the server level)

This only seems to be a problem with server 2012, as I have no problem connecting to server 2008r2 either.

Is there something different I need to do for server 2012?

How to print on a printer on other IP and subnet

For a school project we have a Windows 2k8r2 server that needs to add a printer on a different ip and subnet. The server has ip 192.168.5.2 / 255.255.255.0 and the printer is in 10.43.11.115 / 255.255.255.248

As for the router, we use a Cisco 1841.

Any clues on how to get the printer added on the server? Im assuming we need to do some configuration on the cisco router but we have no clue what.

Problem installing a printer/connecting to a printer on a print server. "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

Hi all,

I have checked related threads to the below error message but have been unable to resolve the issue using suggested fixes. On one of the pcs on the network i administer a message appears when trying to install a printer or connect to a printer on the print server.

The message says:

"This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

The only account on the pc that can install a printer/connect to a printer on the print server is the local admin account. I have checked the local user profile settings on the machine and my own personal account is set to full admin rights. I have checked group policy manager to ensure that there are no rules set to prevent installing/modifying software, which there aren't. Obviously I have full admin rights on my personal account. Moreover, the machine is running Microsoft XP and this is the only machine that is experiencing the problem. The message/error only seems to prevent the adding of printers.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions

Cant get network printer to work, Kyocera.

Hi,

I have tried many different ways to install a Kyocera FS-C2026MFP+ network printer to my companys print server, so we can share it on our network so people can install it over the network and print from it. But the printer already failed to print directly from the server right after the installation of the drivers/printer. Tried all kind of different drivers.

The Printer works fine over the network if you install the driver manually on each computer. But I cant manage to get the printer to work from the Print Server. We have two other network printer installed on the server and they are shared and works fine to install over the network and also print directly from the print server works fine. How ever this Koycera wont work, have deleted all drivers from the print server, from regedit etc and reinstalled it a fewtimes with different drivers. The driver that works on the working machines does not work on the driver either.. So Im kind of clueless at the moment on the next step of try. Don't know what more I can try or do to get it to work.

Running a windows server 2003 x86. The people in our office runs mostly windows 7 machines. Some of them have installed the printer manually because thats the only way it works at the moment.

Anyone have a good suggestion on what I can do?

Server 2008 updated printer drivers with NO internet connection?

We have a Windows 2008 server that can (and will not) be allowed to reach the internet.  BUT this device has 15 models of HP printers hanging off of it.  I need to get proper drivers for certain models.  HP's website says to "INSTALL THE DRIVER by using WINDOWS UPDATE".  That is not possible.

I need the actual drivers - an exe or an inf file.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=74306&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=74301&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4063

I can download and exe or inf file and move it over.  That is the reason I am looking for those types of files.

I've found the printer spooler problems, I do not know how to fix it, since I have tried a lot of ways but it just still doesn't work out properly.

I did try to find the printer spooler in the services menu.

and it 's said the startup type : Automatic

but the service status stopped. I didn't change anything, it is automatic from the beginning.

Also I did try the clean spooler software from one of the people in this forum, but it can't work with my computer. It is written like this, "the spooler on this computer cannot be cleaned because it is running version 6.1 of Windows NT". Then, I want to uninstall my printer, but it can't since the local printer service status is stopped.

I just stuck here, since I have no idea what should I do next. Any idea or help from you guys.

It will be very useful for me and I do really appreciate it.

Thanks

We're using server 2012 and roaming profiles win7 x64. There are several network printers, and we are mounting them to users by GPO.

Everything works well with diferent HP printers, but we are having problems with one Ricoh Aficio MP C 2500.

Some users loosing it like twice a week randomly, and have to search for network printer and add it manualy.

First thought was that its wrong drivers, but Ricoh i tried a few for versions for x64, and its still the same.

What might be a problem?

Turn off Printer Error Status notifications

Hi everyone -

I'm currently running a 3rd party application called PaperCut on my print server. This application allows me to set up one large virtual print queue that can release jobs to individual printers when a user badges into an HID scanner at the printer.

First off: If one user has a print job that errors then every user sees an error message when they try and print. That error message is a notification popup in the taskbar. And it'll say something along the lines of: "Printer in error state. 'PaperCut Cloud on srv-printsrv1' is in an error state" How can I turn this notification off? I'm running Server 2008R2 and I've tried selecting the properties of the Printer Server node to turn off all notifications for local and network printers, but end users still get the pop up.

As soon as I go onto the print server to clear the job that's errored out and another users tries to print things are dandy with no error message.

Second: Why do print jobs error anyway?

Thanks!

Could not get device information Canon IR3225n

Hi There,

I have a seriuos and funny issue, with our Canon printers.

We have Canon IR ADV 3225n and Canon IR ADV C2020i. Few weeks ago, we started to use MS Windows server 2008, and shared printers from the servers.

The Bussines requirement is to use Department and PIN code printing on the printers, and my issue has started here.

On each workstations/laptops this features is not working with the following error message: Could not get device information.

But, on the server it is working without any problems, and when I install them via IP address also working and nobody knows why.

Everybody has Admin rights on their devices, I've tried with the latest driver x86 and X64 without success.

Do you have any experience about it?

Thanks in advance.

Clients can't install printers from new print server?

$

We just installed a new print server on Windows Server 2008 R2 (using the Print Services role).

We installed the printers fine on the server, and can print to the printers from the server no problems. However, when we try to connect to the printers from the client (using the Add Printer wizard > add a network printer > choose from directory listing), it fails to install with the following error, which is less than useful:

"Connect to Printer: Windows couldn't connect to the printer. Check the printer name and try again. If this is a network printer, make sure that the printer is turned on, and that the printer address is correct."

There doesn't appear to be anything in the error logs relating to this.

I have verified that all the settings on the printers are the same as the last print server, and I have disabled the Firewall on the new server just in case that was the problem. I have also removed and reinstalled the role multiple times. If I try to install the printer directly on the client using the IP address, it works, but that totally defeats the purpose of having a print server. There is currently no antivirus installed to be interfering.

Our clients are all Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit, and the server is Windows 2008 R2 x64.

Any help would be appreciated?

Print jobs stay in the queue after job is completed cluttering the queue

I'm running server 2008 r2.  I have multiple printers installed on this server along with the print management role.  This has been a consistent problem.  I've checked some of the previous posts in this forum and they recommend, although with trepidation, setting driver isolation to none so the print jobs will clear the queue.  This helped some of my printers but not all.  These posts also indicated the creator owner needs the manage documents permission which each of these printers has configured.  This is very frustrating.  I would apprecaite any recommendations or a fix for this situation.  Thanks.

I have a Windows 2008 Server R2 64 bit. I am trying to connect to a network printer a Xerox WorkCentre Pro 175 PS for the purpose of printing from the Server (the server is not going to be used as a print server itself). When I do this, it told me the it cannot find the print driver. I went to the Xerox web site and downloaded their universal print driver for Windows 2008 server 64 bit. I got all the way through the installation of this driver and tried to connect to the printer once again. It fails. I got the following error. Can anyone help me?

Installing printer driver Xerox WorkCentre Pro 175 PS failed, error code 0x0, HRESULT 0x80070705. See the event user data for context information.

Only Allow Driver Selection -- Not Installation -- Print Server 2008

Environment - Windows server 2008 R2 clustered across two machines. The cluster has it's own spooler.

Problem: Techs are installing print drivers that are not necessary

Basically, I need the techs in our organization to use the drivers that are already installed. If server 2008 has some sort of connection hiccup with a printer it asks you to install a driver. This is bad for us, very bad. I want to take that option off ... away ... gone, and only allow for selection from the 40 or so correct drivers we have installed when creating a new printer. HELP!

Thanks Guys

Server 2008 RC2 64b - Printers visualy disapeared from Devices and Printers but would seem to still be installed as they cant be reinstalled with the same name.

Hello

I'm running Server 2008 RC2 64bit.

Last night I added 18 printers to a new print server. 3 differant models. I added the 64bit drivers and the 32bit ones for the 32bit clients.

I also added 55 ports.

When I logged back in this morning to contiune to add the remaining printers, only 8 printers are displayed. The majority of one model is not being displayed, 10 printers, but there are still 3 of them being displayed.

The ports these missing printers where assigned to still exists but are not assigned any more.

If I attempt to add the printer again, Windows informs me that I cannot add a printer with the same name as one thats already installed.

If I add a new printer and then attempt to rename it afterwards to one that did exist, I get the same error.

This suggests the printers are still presant in some way.

So any ideas where these printers have gone/why I cant see them anymore?

Thanks in advance

Printer Server configuration in Window 2003 Domain Environment.

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post on this forum. I hope you forget mistakes.

On the topic.

My environment is like window 2003 active directory server with WSUS, DNS configuration. All users are restricted as a default policy. I purchased ( for R&D) D-Link DP-1061 Print server. We have couple of USB printer which I want to use directly as a Network Printer.

Our Network is first class network with same subnet.

Now my question is ...

1)  After Installing printer via print server on Admin account. Its works perfectly but when I log in domain user account. Printer shows offline.   Also there is some Library error while loading in Domain User account.  Of course library is Print server related.

Is there any way to configure printer on Domain user account (Non-Admin)

Please ignore language mistakes.

I am always ready to give you further information regarding same.

Help would be really appreciated.

Thanks & Regards.
