Connecting to a printer on server

$

I've setup a Windows Server 2012 Essentials machine as a file and print server. A printer is installed, ok, on the server and machines have been set up to connect to the printer Ok.

However I have just tried to connect my surface to the printer - Bizarrely though instead of linking to the server connection to the printer, it has connected to one of the other machines on the network that already are connected to the printer. So the connection in devices and printers doesn't show \\server\printer it shows \\computer\printer?

Hope this makes sense and someone can explain how to correct this please?

Thanks

Import printers from 2012 R2 into 2008 R2

Created a new print server running 2012 R2

Installed all printers, drivers and ports - exported using printer migration tool

When I try to import these printers into 2008 R2 x64 server, I get an error that windows cannot read the printer information from the file.

I read somewhere that they made a change in the printer export in 2012.

Is there a solution to this? I have some existing 2008 terminal servers that I want to import all these printers into.

Thank you!

2008 R2 print server and imagerunner advance secure print

Hi all

we have a brand new Canon iRA7260 setup on 2008 R2 print server, which is also our DC, DNS, DHCP and File Server with latest PCL5c drivers downloaded from Canon's website as recommended at that time by the canon technician who assembled the machine. All our laptops and desktops are running Windows 7 64-bit and after creating a GPO everyone got connected to the printer no problem, the printer has a static IP, same subnet as the print server and PDC, printer's port has been setup to RAW and to spool documents, driver isolation setup to default.

All users are setup for secure print, so every print job they send to the printer stays on the printer until they walk up to the machine and release it by punching in a department's pin. Everything works great except for every morning a get a few complaints that the jobs sent to the printer did not appear in the secure print folder. There is no errors of any kind on workstations and all I see in the print job logs on the print server is that document been spooled, printed and deleted. The strange thing is that the size of the document that disappears is always shown as 0 bytes in size and 1 page long. And the whole process of spooling printing and deleting happens within 1 second according to logs. There is no errors or warnings in the log except for informational events.

I just discovered that what actually fixes this issue for me is not even restarting the print spooler on the print server, but just login into the print server from my workstation via RDP with admin credentials. Once I login into the server remotely, every print job sent to the printer afterwards from every workstation in our office appears as usual in users secure print mailboxes. Users don't even have to reboot their work stations, everything just starts working as usual. There is no overnight activities on that server as all our staff leaves the offices by 8 p.m. the latest and the only thing that is running overnight is the Symantec's Backup Executive backup jobs. Do you think excluding C:\Windows\System32\spool directory from the overnight backup jobs could be a solution to this problem?

Thanks!

I'm having an issue with my GPO to deploy printers to a group, which contains several computer accounts - not user account.  I must be missing something from the book, and was hoping someone could provide a link with clear accurate instructions.

Server 2008R2 Standard Server - Fax Server

Server 2003 Standard - DC

Workstations:  Windows 7 x64 - Domain users

Modem US robotics USB modem

Message when trying to add account: you do not have security permissions to complete this operation. Contact your administrator for more information.

I had a working fax server in a production environment that had been working for years.  On Tuesday users were unable to send faxes.  Faxes still were being received and placed in a folder.

When looking at the Fax Account it showed Disconnected.  After removing that and trying to reconnect, I got a message saying that I did not have security permissions.

I tried it from the fax server itself.  It works.  I tried it from the workstation using a Domain Admin account that we use and it works.  I temporarily made the user a domain admin logged out and logged back in.  Still cannot connect to fax server.

Other things that I have done.
uninstalled/reinstalled modem on server
Removed Fax Server Role and re-added
Took ownership of Fax in the Advanced Security section by domain users
Removed fax on server from workstation and re-added successfully
Re-added permissions in the fax manager for domain users, network service, everyone
Disabled Windows Firewall on server
Disabled Antivirus on server

Unable to add network printers from Windows Server 2012 R2 to client running Windows 7 Pro x64

New Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard in the environment.  Added print services to it and added five HP printers to it and shared them.  Also deployed the printers via group policy.

Clients are running Windows 7 Pro x64.  The group policy fails to install the printers (error 0x00000002).  We get the same error when trying to manually add the printer from the client side.

From Event Viewer: Group Policy was unable to add per computer connection <<printer share>>. Error code 0x2. This can occur if the name of the printer connection is incorrect, or if the print spooler cannot contact the print server.

Any ideas on troubleshooting this?

Thanks.

Print driver corruption

Hi,

We have a Windows 2008 R2 print server and Windows 7 (x86 and 64) clients connecting to it. Randomly the print drivers on the client get corrupted. It is mostly for Xerox machines (I think because they are the bigger printers, used by a lot more people), but it does happen on other printers as well. We applied the 3001232 fix with out any luck. I have read on other threads that disabling CSR might work, but it will tax our server too much and we want to try other things before doing this. Is there something else that worked for any of you? And if nothing else worked, did disabling CSR give 100% result? at least close to 95% positive result in ending the driver corruption?

Thank you and have a great day,
Sravani

We don't want to rename our new Print Server after Print Migration

$

Hi,

I am preparing to migrate our print services to a new Windows 2008 R2 PC from Windows 2003.

I was reviewing the steps and noticed that it is suggested to rename the new Print Server to the old print server name.

I have two problems with this:

1. The old print server is also a file share server and I need to keep it up and running for some time so I don't want to rename it.

2. The new print server is already named and will be the new file share server at some point

Currently we have AD groups that receive particular printer GPO's based on their requirements. Would it be enough to just change the GPO's to point to the new Printer Server/Printer after the printer migration?

Thanks

Julie

Windows Server push config for fax modem

$

We have a new Windows 2012 R2 Server, we installed a fax modem on it and turned the fax server feature on. We were hoping to be able to share the fax as a printer and push through GPO, which being pushed but when the end user attempt to print to it in order to send a fax, a new fax configure wizard shows up....

So we are trying to find if there is a way to push this config to all users without having to configure every individual end user PC which is a nightmare.

The end product should be fax being pushed through GPO, when they print to it, its being processed and sent auto after they type the number they want to fax it to, that's it.

Printing Problem with Epson LX-300+ii and LX-310 in Windows Server 2012 R2 64-bit

I recently installed Windows Server 2012 R2 64-Bit.

We have Printer Epson LX-300+ii and LX-310 (dot-matrix) that we share among users. Each user access the Server using Remote Desktop. From previous experience with Windows Server 2008, I knew that these printers will be problematic, especially regarding the Easy Print driver.

And I was right, using the Easy Print driver, I got the following result:

And so, I did manual mapping & disable the "Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first". Haha, what a surprise, I got the following result:

And so I uninstalled the printer driver, and install it again, thinking that I might chose a wrong driver, but.... same result. I know for sure that I chose the correct driver.

Next, I tried connecting the printer DIRECTLY to the server. Log-in to the Server directly, not using Remote Desktop. And tried printing again, haha... really... what a surprise... I got the same problem here !!!

So now I know the problem is not the Easy Print driver, not mapping or registry problem either. It's the print driver. This is SUPER FRUSTRATING, I tried the same driver from the same CD in Windows 8.1 64-Bit with no problem. I tried it too in Windows 7 32-Bit with no-problem either. But somehow, this driver is problematic in Windows Server 2012 R2.

Any help? Anybody else bump into this same problem ? I'm close to giving up, been spending too much time figuring out this damn thing.

Shared Printers Offline for some users

$

We have a 32 bit Windows 2008 print server with various printers from different vendors with 64 bit and 32 bit drivers. The printers are deployed to computers using computer group policies. There are some computers from different OU's and different site locations where all printers from that print server show as offline. Most computers are able to print without difficulty.

  • When I try to add another printer from the print server from an affected workstation using \\servername\printername, an error message pops up saying the print server spooler service is offline. When I add the printer using \\IPaddressOfServer\printername, the printer adds without any issues.
  • From an affected workstation when I ping the server name, I get the correct IP, and when I ping -a the IP I get the correct server name.
  • I am also able to add printers from a different print server using \\servername\printername
  • If I restart the spooler service on the local workstation, the printers are online again. But after a restart, they are back offline.
  • Unchecking Use SNMP in the Configure Port menu of one of the printers doesn't cause the printer to show as online for the affected workstations.
  • Reimaging the affected computers fixes the problem temporarily, but after a couple of weeks, the printers go offline again
  • It doesn't seem to matter which user is logged in to the computer. Even logged in as a domain admin.

Again, this is happening on only a few dozen or so workstations. Most others are fine. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Issue with multiple printers being created when deploying them via preferences.

I was wondering if anyone ever had an issue with deploying printers through preferences by having multiple entries when trying to create a single entry. Then when it deploys the printer it creates multiple print queues on the client PCs. It just started doing this for no apparent reason. Does anyone know what may have caused this issue and how it may be resolved? Thanks much.

Hi All,

"The print queue could not be found on domain AD.CONTOSO.COM  It may have been deleted from the Active Directory directory service. Windows will attempt to republish the print queue.  Error: 2116"

This event is seen in our print server but it doesn't actually state which queue it is trying to publish. How do I republish? Is it just a matter of unticking List in Directory and reticking it again?

The queue still exists and we haven't actually changed it at all. Why is it suddenly having publishing errors?

Compressing Print Jobs over the WAN RDS2012R2

$

Good Day,

We have migrated from a W2k3 Citrix 4.5 environment to a W2k12R2 RDS/RemoteApps environment. The only issue we are having is with reduction of speed in printing over the WAN. In the old world, the Citrix Universal Print Driver was utilized and it did such a fine job of compressing the print stream. We have some users that do a batch print job (printing 500 invoices at once) and the time to print has quadrupled.

We have taken some steps to improve this by sharing the printers on the same LAN as the RDS environment instead of using the redirected easy print driver printers, but still we are wondering what else we can do besides purchasing Citrix for the new environment? Third party product like TSPrint or ThinPrint?

Thank you,

Steve J.

What happened if there is a problem during printer import to new server?

Hi, Friends

I am working on printer server upgrade and printer migration project in my company.

The old server is Windows Server 2003 x64, and the new one is Windows Server 2008 x64.

When I import the file to new server, I get message 'Import complete' (but the progress bar is grey, not blue).

I check the the problem in Event Viewer.

Event ID 29

Printbrm.exe (the Printer Migration Wizard or the command-line tool) could not restore language monitor Esker MF Language Monitor while restoring print queues from a file. Check the print queue backup file and examine the Windows error returned by this event to determine the cause.

And when I check the printers, there is nothing imported, no printer, no dirver, no port.

So, I am confused if the problem in event viewer stops other printers in the import processing?

Or I do somthing wrong before importing the file? Anyone has met this problem before?

Thank you in advance.
