printer spooler service is gone

I am running Windows 8 and trying to add a printer to my network.

The network identifies that the printer is there, but when I press Add Printer, I get the Error message "Windows can't open Add Printer.  The local print spooler service is not running.  Please restart the spooler or restart the machine."

I first tried restarting my computer, but that did not help.  I then went to the services window to start the service manually, but the print spooler service was not on the list.

Help!!
